General information:

  • I come from England.
  • Before I went freelance as a translator, I spent several years as a teacher (in Germany and England) and worked for several years in the editorial department of Cornelsen Verlag, an educational publisher in Berlin.
  • Freelance translator since 1991.
  • From 1994: state-examined translator, court-approved interpreter and member of the German translators' association BDÜ. Since 1999: Member of the Institute of Linguists, London.
  • Various book translations, direct clients and translation agencies.
  • I do all translations personally.
If you need a translation:
  • Subject?
  • Good knowledge of the subject areas, extensive reference material, experience in research on the Internet. If you have a list of terminology in your specialist area, that is a valuable help.
  • Linguistic style?
  • Excellent understanding of the German original - even if it is phrased in a complex linguistic style. Good written style in the target language, English.
  • Schedule?
  • Sometimes a long text can be translated surprisingly quickly, sometimes a short text takes a surprising amount of time. Planning and consultation in advance is best where possible.
  • Volume?
  • The number of pages gives a first impression of the amount of text. The exact volume is best determined by computer when the translation is finished.
  • Costs?
  • The fee is arranged by agreement. It is normally based on a standard line (55 keystrokes).
  • Logistics?
  • Ideally, your original should be provided as a computer file. Data exchange by e-mail where possible. I use a computer-assisted translation system with an integrated terminology database (Déjà Vu).
  • File format?
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, HTML; other file formats by arrangement if necessary.
